This summer, Smarter Together along with UIV (Urban Innovation Vienna) held a first harvesting workshop in order to ensure sustainable roll out and replication of the recently completed second pilot project phase of Vienna’s Data Platform (www.smartdata.wien) based on FIWARE, and open-source platform for smart data solutions.
From Outputs to Outcomes
Generally speaking, data platforms are key in the global smart city approach, and Vienna was able to use the opportunity of Smarter Together to conduct in- depth research on potential data platform solutions that would be fit for a roll out and replication in the European lighthouse city. Following a one-year research and screening phase, Smarter Together in cooperation with the responsible department decided to implement the FIWARE platform in a pilot phase. Initially, it was first rolled out for project purposes in order to have a real time testing phase. FIWARE was chosen due to its high flexibility and because all data stay in the property of the City of Vienna and no solution is vendor-locked. Hence, innovation is ensured, flexibility in the application and future adaptations with highly limited financial risks are given. Democratic accountability is also ensured in this way.
The pilot phase confirmed the high potential and replicability of the data platform based on FIWARE. The outcome will be the further basis for replication of the results.
