The Open New Middle School I and the New Middle School II at the Enkplatz in Vienna-Simmering will soon be expanded. The school project is being implemented by WIP Wiener Infrastruktur Projekt GmbH, a company of Wien Holding subsidiary WSE Wiener Standortentwicklung GmbH. On 28 March 2018 there was a topping-out ceremony for the works.

The concept of the Viennese architects Burtscher-Durig situates the four new standard gyms underground and thus creates a generous outdoor sports area with around 3 500 square meters for the approximately 1 000 pupils. The annex with 13 classrooms, specialist rooms, open break and work areas and a new school library will be connected in the form of a crossbar to the listed building. The new stairwells with lift enable barrier-free access not only to the new building but also to the existing school building. At the peer celebration, representatives of the district council Thomas Steinhart and Wien Holding managing director Sigrid Oblak were able to get an idea of the construction progress.

Future-oriented with „Smarter Together“
The project is funded under the EU’s Smarter Together program, which aims to test and implement smart city approaches in the existing residential area. The comprehensive school expansion project grew out of the original idea of making students ambassadors of the Smart City. Initial EU funding amounts to 457 000 euros. Numerous Smart City topics were taken into account: refurbishment, energy management, local energy generation, recovery of surplus energy, infrastructure requirements, participation processes and integration. The complete completion is planned for August 2019. The city is investing a total of around 27 million euros in the project.

Sustainable energy concept
The gymnasiums are executed in „zero energy construction“. In addition to a photovoltaic system, the building services concept also envisages the use of geothermal energy in conjunction with heat pumps. In addition, in cooperation with Wien Energie, a solar thermal system will be built which will feed excess heat into the district heating network. For optimum indoor air quality, a ventilation system with heat recovery is planned for the gymnasiums.

In addition, innovative smart city solutions are being implemented at the school location: Innovative seating furniture, so-called solar benches, has already been set up in the forecourt of the two schools. They offer the possibility to charge smartphones and other mobile devices via integrated photovoltaic cells.

The public and schools are regularly informed about the progress of the project. For further insights, the school’s energy data will be automatically delivered to a data platform every quarter of an hour and evaluated by experts from the City of Vienna.

More Space
"With this project, we are creating more space and a particularly attractive learning environment for the children and young people in the district, while at the same time implementing smart city solutions that will improve the city of Vienna as a whole and the students‘ stay in particular," says Deputy Head of District Thomas Steinhart. "This will be a special showpiece project implemented in Simmering, which will certainly be a role model for other districts of Vienna."

"The extension of the schools on the Enkplatz is a lighthouse project. The WIP Wiener Infrastructure Project GmbH, a company of the Wien Holding subsidiary WSE Wiener Standortentwicklung GmbH, has realized numerous school additions and newbuildings in recent years Concept and innovative solutions a sign for the future," says Wien Holding CEO Sigrid Oblak.
