Description & main goal

The pick-up boxes of Austrian Post enable the deposit of parcels, letters and registered mail directly at the place of residence. If the delivery attempt is unsuccessful, the Postal carrier deposits the letter or parcel into the pick-up box and informs the recipient. With the notification, the recipient can open the pick-up box and take out the item.

Within this project, about 400 buildings will be equipped with about 500 pick-up boxes. All in all about 15.000 residents will profit from this innovative service.

Especially the residents (customers) are involved, as they are using this service, but also the owners or administrators of the buildings, who must agree to the installation of the pick-up boxes

Main challenges & risks

One challenge is to find out the necessary data, for example the administrator responsible for the building. Another challenge is to convince the owner or administrator and the residents of the great advantage of the pick-up boxes.

The boxes are equipped with a security system (lock) based on RFID technology. The codes for unlocking of the boxes can be reused but must be re-programmed after usage.
