Smart city app as the mobile access to services developed within the project; providing standard functions like authentication, payment and used for access control. (T4.4.3)

Munich Data management platform & smart services

General facts

Description & main goal

Develop and provide an access-platform for mobile applications using and combining existing building blocks within the city infrastructure (e.g. strong cooperation with SWM/MVG, Portalgesellschaft etc.) as far as possible. Allow partners and service providers to offer innovative smart services to the people in project district. Activate the IT-community, start-ups and companies to develop and run innovative services.

Support variants of business models which should concentrate on functionality using standardized services and interface for identity management, payment, navigation etc.

Specific facts

Main challenges & risks
  • No adequate technical architecture, building block and solutions are available to the project
  • City App is not accepted by the end users or community
  • High competition on the market of mobile solutions
Which risks & challenges is the project currently facing?

Planning:

Development and coordination of a common time-line, considering diverse needs of stakeholders. Integration of diverse stakeholder interests, existing time-lines and own projects and the definition of roles and responsibilities within the task is difficult, because of the enormous communication and coordination work.

Financial:

Insufficient funding for cost-intensive modules of the City App.

Which are critical or seem invincible? Please provide a detailed description
Insufficient funding: The most interesting modules (e.g. user ID, e-payment, digital map, e-marketplace) of the City App are cost-intensive and currently above budget. To overcome this situation, discussion is still in progress
Which lessons learned can be derived up to this point from the implementation process?
Use of existing modules to get a fully integrated system (City App Munich) and not an isolated solution
What could be done better in comparable future projects (what needs to be done and what needs to be prevented)?
Additional time for intensive workshops with all stakeholders particularly developers and users. More funding should be allocated to the development of integrated technology solutions.

Unchanged since M18 - insufficient funding: the more interesting modules (e.g. user ID, e-payment, digital map, e-marketplace) of the City App are cost-intensive and currently above budget. To overcome this situation discussion is still in progress
Which lessons learned can be derived up to this point from the implementation process?
Use of existing modules to get a fully integrated system (City App Munich) and not an isolated solution; It is helpfully to implement a prototype for the discussion with all other stakeholders and especially for the technical coordination of the standard interfaces and data exchange

Insufficient funding: The most interesting modules of the City App are cost-intensive and currently above budget. To overcome this situation, discussion is still in progress. Integration of the digital map of the City of Munich because other project not in time; Integration of the user-ID and e-payment because other project not in time;

Which lessons learned can be derived up to this point from the implementation process?

More funding should be allocated to the development of integrated technology solutions.

Use of existing modules to get a fully integrated system (Munich SmartCity) and not an isolated solution. > to further develop existing modules into an integrated Munich SmartCity App.

It is helpful to develop a Prototype Web-App to gain some experience and to test usability and APIs.

Additional time would be needed for intensive workshops with all stakeholders, and in particular with developers and users.
